Dr. Joseph Wyatt of Pierre, South Dakota, maintains a long history of success as a urological surgeon for private medical centers and government organizations. Presently, Dr. Wyatt serves as a full-time staff surgeon at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center and the Avera Medical Group, both in Pierre, and as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 114th Fighter Wing (FW) of the South Dakota Air National Guard. 

Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Joseph Wyatt graduated with Honors in Research and a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology from Purdue University. He went on to study medicine at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine before transferring to the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2000. Over the following two years, Dr. Wyatt completed his studies for his Doctor of Medicine and he served as a Captain and Flight Surgeon in the 122nd FW of the Indiana Air National Guard. His duties with the 122nd FW included providing primary, emergent, and preventive medical care to Air National Guard members and their dependents. Upon receiving his Doctor of Medicine, Dr. Wyatt conducted a surgical internship with the Indiana University health system before relocating to Alabama to perform a five-year residency in urology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. 

While based in Birmingham, Dr. Joseph Wyatt served as a Flight Surgeon in the Alabama Air National Guard’s 187th FW and the 100th Fighter Squadron. Following 9/11, he was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Dr. Wyatt also participated in relief efforts in the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. Since moving to Pierre, South Dakota, Dr. Wyatt has overseen all operative and post-operative care for patients receiving urological surgery at St. Mary’s and Avera Medical. He also participates in state and national medical societies and he served as a district representative for the South Dakota State Medical Association from 2009 to 2010.
